Hello and Happy New Year.., so how was your new year so far... Mine got off on a hectic start...
On the very first day itself I was already at Malaysia’s premier shopping destination, Pavilion KL to watch the highly anticipated “World Dragon & Lion Dance Extravaganza – Malaysia Edition 2020”, one the first events of a calendar-packed Visit Malaysia 2020....
The extraordinary and also truly breathtaking sight of 4 majestic dragons and 130 prancing lions of all imaginable colours from dance troupes all over Malaysia converging at Pavilion KL was just amazing...
The thrilling day-long series of performances showcased the uniqueness of Malaysian culture and heritage and is a big draw to tourists and local alike, especially when the local Chinese community believe how lucky it is to touch the lions or dragon....
Present to officiate the launch was Guest of Honour, YB Tuan Haji Khalid Bin Abdul Samad, Minister of Federal Territories; accompanied by YBhg Dato’ Nor Hisham Ahmad Dahlan, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur; YBhg Dato’ Joyce Yap, CEO of Retail, Pavilion KL; YBhg Dato’ Philip Ho, CEO of Pavilion REIT; and YBhg Dato’ Maznah binti Abdul Jalil, Pavilion REIT Board of Director.
The event was also attended by partners, tour and travel agencies, as well as members of the media, and looked on by hundreds of tourists and shoppers.
The event started with the VIPs taking part in the traditional eye dotting ceremony of 10 colourful lions, bringing them to life and filling them with energy and liveliness to launch the auspicious event. To add to the festivities, the VIPs also made a wish tossing golden coins into the iconic Pavilion Crystal Fountain to symbolize luck, prosperity and good fortune.
Over 1200 dedicated members from various dragon and lion dance troupes from all over Malaysia took part in this fun-filled and vibrant, day-long extravaganza.
Continuing with the excitement, visitors were treated to the Kids Lion Dance Championship featuring children aged two to twelve years old from 10 different dance troupes representing their respective primary schools.

Everyone also enjoyed a special finale performance by 2019 Genting World Lion Dance Championship winner, Khuan Loke Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe.
Shoppers, visitors and tourists were treated to a colorful and extravagant Pavilion Parade, where the 130 lions paraded around the different entrances and precincts of the mall to bless and bring good luck and good fortune for the New Year.
Held for the third consecutive year at Pavilion KL, this is the first time the World Dragon & Lion Dance will feature a Cultural Exhibition at Dining Loft, Level 7 to showcase the unique origins and history of this wonderful cultural heritage. This exhibition is open to the public from 1 January until 9 February 2020.
In conjunction with this celebration, and to uphold the heritage of Lion Dance, Pavilion KL also donated ten lion costumes to ten respective schools in Malaysia – SJKC Kepong 3; SJKC Jalan Davidson Lion Dance Group; SJKC Tsun Jin; SJKC San Yuk Lion Dance Rawang Selangor; SJKC Kampung Baru Ampang; SJKC Choong Min Teluk Intan; SJKC Serdang Baru; SJKC Subang; and SJKC Yu Hua Dragon & Lion Dance Association Kajang.
Since opening its doors to the public in 2007, Pavilion KL has always been actively promoting shopping tourism and elevating the status of Malaysia as a tourism destination. The mall is at the forefront of retail innovation and excellence, winning over 47 international and local awards.
To support Visit Malaysia 2020 and reward tourist shoppers, Pavilion KL has embarked on a new gifting partnership with Union Pay and Royal Selangor to create a unique gift – a boarding pass holder in 3 colours designed with a pewter panel on the cover, featuring the iconic Pavilion Crystal Fountain.
Promoting Malaysian pewter heritage and craftmanship, this gift is available for redemption throughout the year for Union Pay cardholders with minimum spend of RM300 in a single receipt.
