Five thousand challengers signed up for the obstacle course event that is Great Eastern Genting King of the Mountain but hundreds more joined in for the camaraderie of the day. There was no doubt the recent Viper Challenge was a huge success at The Ranch @ Gohtong Jaya recently...
About 5,000 participants took part in the recent Viper Challenge held at The Ranch, Gohtong Jaya on 15 July 2017. The event, organized by Original Bootcamp featured food trucks and music as the main highlights in its post-event carnival.
This year, 16 obstacles awaited participants along a 10km route; challenges old and new providing an adrenaline-fueled test to those who dare.
New challenges this year include Wheel of Fortune, featuring for the first time in a Viper Challenge event, while last year's big hit, Rotating Cube, is unsurprisingly also included.
And after all the huffing and puffing, the participants proceeded to the post-run carnival where they will no doubt enjoy the bustle and camaraderie evident amidst all the good food and great music. This year's food trucks include Big Hug Burger, Cowboys and Babaritos and others.
The fun atmosphere was also complemented by the musical acts that have been lined up. Two groups will entertain guests, namely Groovology, a four-piece band specializing in contemporary R&B, neo-soul and light jazz band, and Double Ace that is made up of the duo, Allan Murillon and Albert Sirimal. The duo is known for delivering gentle harmonies and acoustic numbers, covering old songs and newer hits alike.
It is not just about showing one's physical prowess as they take on the obstacles of the Viper Challenge. It is also about people's ability to demonstrate solidarity and team spirit even as they are tested physically and mentally along the 10km route interspersed with various obstacles
As runners are waved off in batches from 7am onwards, they come upon one after another of daunting challenges. Sixteen obstacles awaited them along the route covering a landscape filled with crooked pathways and rugged terrain.
The obstacles that the participants have to overcome this year are Island Hopping, Fence Climb, Medball Hill Carry, Shock Therapy, Mini Walls, Tread Water, Hands on Fire, Rubber Burn, Incline Walls, Ladder Climb, Stuck in the Mud, The Peak, Up the Pipes, Wheel of Fortune, Rotating Cubes, and Diamond Cube.
The new obstacle, Wheel of Fortune, has a five-metre high structure that tests the participant's upper body strength as they have to dangle from loops to navigate their way out of it. Another highly daunting obstacle is surely Rotating Cubes that made a favourable impact on participants last year. Giant cubes floating on water are what participants are confronted with in this challenge; they have to work together in order to maneuver their way through the obstacle.
The other obstacles are no less formidable, each presenting a different challenge. Diamond Cube, for instance, is a test of grip strength, requiring one to pull oneself up a high wall in order to get to the other side.
New comer in Viper Challenge, Jonathan Nyst, the 31 year old cross-fit trainer who hails from Belgium found the new obstacle the wheel of fortune was particularly challenging despite being a fitness trainer. The wheel of fortune was a challenging obstacle where one has to use a lot of the upper body’s strength to complete the challenge without falling into the water but it was a great challenge overall’ said Nyst.
