A Different Kind Of Christmas with the Orang Asli Community

The villagers from the Semai Tribe of Kampung Pos Woh in Tapah were given a chance to enjoy an early jolly Christmas with singing and dancing, as they welcomed the volunteers with a traditional Sewang dance.

With the spirit of giving in the air, it was truly a great occasion for everyone to be together especially as the orang asli village were visited by the excited management team of Sunway Putra Mall and volunteers from Touching Lives Club Kuala Lumpur & Selangor.

The visit was part of an outreach project called ‘Food Bank’ which was held last weekend to reach out to the orang asli community and to provide food supplies and home necessities such as rice packets, canned food, biscuits and even toiletries to them.

Village chief, Betamin, 56 said the villagers were overjoyed with the visit by the

volunteers, as this was the first time a shopping mall organisation has conducted such a programme at their village.

“I hope programmes like this could be conducted on a more regular basis,” he said.

Apart from that, Santa also paid a surprise visit to the village and distributed  candies and sweets to the children. As the villagers gathered in the hall, Santa Clause and Ms Stella, a volunteer from the Touching Lives Club helped the kids to place

Christmas ornaments and decorations on the Christmas tress while the others
assisted to decorate the church with Christmas decorations.

The children were also smiling from ear to ear as they received goodies from the volunteer teams just before they left the village. The volunteers were extremely humbled as they interacted with the lovely people of the Semai Tribe.

Present during the event, was the Marketing Manager of Sunway Putra Mall, Ms Melissa Hashim, to help distribute the food items and to give goodie bags to the villagers.
“Outreach programmes such as this are vital to raise the community’s awareness and we are grateful that our initiatives are making a difference to the community around us. This was indeed a fruitful mission for us.  ” Said Melissa.

Also present was the founder of Touching Lives Club Kuala Lumpur & Selangor, Mr Raymond Tan.
“With this contributions, not only it bring happiness, but we hope that it will help to support their basic necessities of life.” Added Mr Raymond.
More than RM23,000 worth of

donations and food items were collected since the launch of the campaign and this includes donations by Daiso, MBG Fruits and Second Cup.  All donations were distributed to the Semai Tribe at Kampung Batu Satu, Tapah with the help of Sunway Putra Mall management team and the Touching Lives Club KL & Selangor committee members.
