Most
people say that your trip to Penang would never be complete without trying
Laksa, Ais Kacang and the famous Penang
Road Chendul…
Well, you can have Ais Kacang and the famous Penang Road
Chendul at Lebuh Keng Kwee and enjoy joining the hoards of crowd there… or if you prefer to wait for your ordered chendul
on the table in comfort of some nice air conditioning….. you may choose to visit
its shop in Komtar Walk.
Anyway, I was in Penang and my husband can never resist his Chendul, but he decided to head to the one at Komtar Walk, so here we are…..
I liked the cafe decor here at Komtar Walk is pretty much reminiscent with the old coffee shop style chairs and tables, antiques and old pictures…..
It is almost like stepping back in time....
There is only one minor issue or complain I have…. And that is… there are pesky mosquitoes around, and my mini me was complaining about it… but the management tries to keep it away….so it would be advised to use mosquito repellent while going around Penang ...
They serve a few Penang favorites here... besides Chendul and Ice Kacang..such as the Teochew Laksa, Teochew Rojak, Curry Mee, Chee Cheong Fun and Nasi Lemak
My husband and daughter ordered the Chendul (RM2.50) of course.....Anyway hmmm what is cendol? It is actually crushed ice, with
green pandan worm-like jelly, brown sugar , red kidney beans served with
copious amounts of coconut milk/ santan .
It is the next best thing when you
walk it out of hot and searing heat of a humid day.
My Ice Kacang with Ice Cream (RM4.30)... The Ice Kacang here which is pretty good as well. It contains
crushed ice, the usual colouring and flavouring (syrup, evaporated milk), corn,
"cin cau", some type of green jelly, and of course red kidney beans
(kacang). You can have an optional scoop of vanilla ice cream if you like.....
They also serve some drinks, such as chrysanthemum tea and air pegaga (supposedly
with to cool a heaty body down), both which are my favourite… and I always have
a hard time deciding which one I want… LOL
Whereas I ordered some Chee Cheong Fun (RM3.00) . Chee Cheong Fun is made from hand cut steamed flat rice
noodle rolls. This is a popular snack in Penang as it is simply tasty and the
price is affordably cheap.
The rice noodles are quite like koay teow too and mostly sourced from the supplier, some with springy texture while others
slightly chewy. It is served with the three basic sauces – sweet sauce (tee
cheow), generous helping of shrimp paste (hae ko) and chili paste along with a dash of oil, fried
shallots and toasted sesame seeds.
My daughter is a huge fan of Laksa, so she was not about to say no to the Penang Road Teochew Laksa (RM5.00) Laksa is a firm hawker favorite in Penang. It is made from steamed fat spaghetti-sized
rice vermicelli and garnished with
finely sliced onions, cucumber, chillis, pineapple, lettuce, mint and pink bunga
kantan (ginger buds).
Then a steaming hot spicy fish gravy that is sour and thick
with tamarind paste and fish flesh and served with a generous helping of shrimp
paste (hae ko)...MMmmmm.....just delicious....
So there you have it, I have shared where to get some of this Penang favorites in air conditioned comfort and a nice antique like ambience... go enjoy...
