The unique markings on the giant panda, makes it resemble a huge living teddy bear, made this animal into the symbol of the fight for the preservation of endangered species.
The panda is actually a bear. An odd looking bear, but a real bear, yeah... it's real! The panda species appeared about 12 million years ago, and the oldest known panda species, called the Ailuropoda microta, was half the size of the current panda species. Then there was the Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which lived 2-3 million years ago, and had the same appetite for bamboo. A supposedly more recent panda species, which roamed the earth about less than a million years ago, was bigger than the current species. Many fossil remains of the panda are associated with the fossil elephant genus Stegodon.
Today, there are just about 3,000 panda bears live in bamboo rich coniferous forests, over 23,000 square km, in 6 mountain areas in southwestern China, in the middle of the Yangtze basin, between 1,200-3,200 m (4,000-10,600 ft) altitude. The clime in these mountains is pretty cold with snow 3-4 months annually (that's why panda has a 3-10 cm (1.2-4 in) long fur) and heavy rain summers, due to the monsoon. Brrrr...... they live in such cold climates no wonder their enclosure at Zoo Negara is fully airconditioned.....
99 % of the panda's diet is made of bamboo. A single panda can ingests 38 kg (90 pounds) of bamboo daily (an activity that takes around 14 hours, but even up to 16 hours).
Pandas communicate through sounds and smell. They are known to mark their territories with the smelly product of two anal glands, which is rubbed on the trees. Territories could overlap, but as pandas are solitary animals, they try to avoid each other. Panda has vertical pupils like in cats.
