Yours truly here was at the National Visual Art Gallery yesterday in nail biting anticipation while waiting for the judges of the 1st ever National Hygiene Doodle competition to announce their winners.
What are Doodles? Doodles are spontaneous marks of patterns or images of objects, people, faces, etc done on practically any surface, but normally on paper or even table napkins.
It was once thought of as a waste of time, but recent research in neuroscience , psychology and design shows that doodling helps people to stay more focused, and enable people to grasp new concepts in an easier manner as well as retain information.
Anyway, Antabax, my favourite antibacterial personal care range organized this competition a while back which ran from September 1st, 2014 to October 19th, 2014.
Out from a total of 2,451 entries, the judges here sure had a mammoth task of selecting the best Doodles for the Antabax National Hygiene Doodle Competition with a total of RM22,500 to be won in cold hard cash....
To encourage the artistic expression of participants, an exhibition of 60 doodles, 20 from each of the three category was held at the National Visual Art Gallery, and was attended by the finalists, their families, friends and teachers who came from across the nation to show their support. The contestants came from as far as Sibu!!!
Nabbing first place in their respective categories were Louis Fong Jin, 12 years old from HELP International School (primary category), Siti Balkis Mahd Salleh Masari, 17 years old from SMK Puncak Alam, Selangor (secondary category) and Mohammad Nur Syafiq Bin Azhar, 22 from Universiti Teknologi Mara Bandaraya Melaka (tertiary category)
They each received RM3,000 and an Antabax product hamper for their creativity and skill.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Assunta Satu from Petaling Jaya was the school with the most entries, with 399 students sending in their entries. The school received RM3,000 in cash for their combined effort.
The Antabax National Hygiene Doodle Competition was born out of a group brainstorming session that naturally involved a lot of doodling. They then researched doodling and realized it had relevance to health and hygiene, especially hand hygiene as almost everyone use their hands to doodle.
The cognitive and creativity benefits for doodling also impressed them and that was how to Antabax National Hygiene Doodle Competition cam about, according to Lam Soon Edible Oils Sdn Bhd, Group Product manager, Household and Personal Care, Marketing Division, Ms Angeline Sim.

Doodling is an activity anyone can do anytime and anywhere, as no special equipment is required aside from paper , pen or pencil. It helps express ideas, thoughts and emotions, so encourage your little ones to doodle. My little girl took part in the contest but her art work was not selected but she loves doodling a lot...and always have a notebook and pens in her bag.
It is after all a great way to get children and youth to put away their smart phones, iPads and tablets for a little while and rediscover the skill and talents of their own hands...
Try it out....
